Background:	CA19-9 is a serum tumor marker for pancreatic cancer diagnosis. It is also used for monitoring therapy in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. CA19-9 is synthesized by normal pancreatic and biliary ductal cells and by gastric, colon, endometrial and saliva epithelia. In a normal patient, it is present in small amounts in serum. The plasmatic levels of CA19-9 are greatly increased in neoplastic disease.
